A Tragic Announcement from Maureen

“We have been through difficult times at HOPE over the years, this is the absolute worst of them. On Sunday 11th October, in complete shock and devastation, we announced the untimely and sudden death of our beloved Geeta Venkadakrishnan. There will never be anyone like Geeta, this loss is almost impossible for us to put into words. She was the most special of human beings. Our hearts are absolutely breaking as we write this.

Geeta had been privately battling Covid 19 recently. We were respecting her request for privacy, we had been monitoring her progress while quietly praying for her speedy recovery. Up until the morning of Sunday 11th October Geeta was recovering and we were all hopeful, but as a result of a massive heart attack she tragically died that afternoon.

There are no words that can express our deep anguish and sorrow for the enormity of this tragic loss. Geeta has been a special friend to me for 21 years and a special friend to the HOPE family. To her HOPE family all over the world, many of you met her and loved her, everyone knew her big heart and will mourn her loss with us all. We are especially thinking of her beloved HOPE children who will be heartbroken.

Our deepest sympathy is with her husband Ravi and her son Harish, her family and her close friends, colleagues as they try to come to terms with such a tragic loss.”

Geeta dedicated her life to her work, her passion never wavered, she never stopped, so neither will we. We have to continue, in her memory. If you wish to honour Geeta you can donate to HOPE in her memory to help us continue her mission. Geeta, we will remember you and honour you in carrying on your work with your beloved children.

Geeta going away is a massive setback to the humanitarian work that takes place in Kolkata and other parts of the country by the Hope Kolkata Foundation. It’s hard to imagine how her friends, colleagues ans esp. the children at Hope Kolkata will cope with this loss. My condolences to everyone at Hope Kolkata Foundation and her family and friends.

"For I have left my heart with you,
So don’t you ever cry.
The love that’s deep within me,
Shall reach you from the stars,
You’ll feel it from the heavens,
And it will heal the scars."

Dear Geeta was such a lady, when I was in India in 2006 I had the absolute honour of meeting her. I can still see her near the stairs as we were all introduced to her, such a beautiful smiley face, the face of an angel sent to this world to help others. Such a big loss to HOPE and of course her husband and son, May her very gentle soul rest in peace, I will light a candle for her this weekend, God bless you Geeta RIP Xxx

Geeta's sad demise is a heartbreaking shock . She was a wonderful person wholeheartedly committed to the cause of the underprivileged. I feel fortunate to have worked with her and her team in Kolkata. On several occasions she had visited our school with the children of Hope Foundation and addressed our students and we too paid several visits to the homes run by Hope Foundation. We have learnt a lot from her selfless service and dedication. She has been and always will be a great source of inspiration for us, at The Future Foundation School. I pray for her eternal peace.

I am deeply anguished to hear about the passing of Geeta. I had the lovely opportunity of working with her for 2 months in the summer of 2012 as a HOPE volunteer. Her relentless drive and passion to help the vulnerable inspired me at a young age and I will carry those lessons with me for the rest of my life. God bless her soul.

I met Geeta when researching my book on HOPE, 'Daring to Dream'. She was a force of nature who had time for everyone. She said "every child is a diamond that just needs to be shone". That quote sums up her life's work. Rest in Power, Geeta.

Saddened and dismayed by the loss of a beautiful soul and angel, a mother for 100s of children of Kolkata. Her spirit lives on because she moved hearts through her smile, sacrifice, selflessness and passion for helping the poor and downtrodden. May her soul rest in peace Amen. May god give strength to her family, her beloved husband and son during these times. God Bless.

I had the opportunity of coming into contact and working in institutional partnership. A vivacious, energetic personality, her commitment to humanitarian work preceded other loyalties. She mixed and moved with the deprived at a grassroots level.

Deeply grieved about her untimely demise. May her soul rest in peace.
