Role: Maintenance staff at HOPE Hospital and social worker in the HOPE Emergency Response Team
Posted at: HOPE Hospital[/vc_message][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_column_text]How long have you worked for HOPE?
Chiranjit: I was in The Missionaries of Charity Home from 6 years of age due to poverty. My father left us when I was 5 years old. Since then I saw the sufferings of life. My mother was working as a Matron in the Missionaries of Charity. I studied there till class X.
After that I started working as a gardener at that centre. Then I joined the Hope Hospital in 2014 and now I have over 6 years of experience here.
How did you know you wanted to work in social care?
Chiranjit: I wanted to help my mother to run the family smoothly. For that reason I started working at a very early age. I like social work to help the needy people because I faced a lot of poverty in my life.
Are you from Kolkata?
Chiranjit: No, I am not from Kolkata. I live in the Village of Gangarampur, District South 24 Parganas.
How does it feel to see such suffering in Kolkata?
Chiranjit: When I see the street people in serious crisis I feel very sad. They are absolutely helpless and they cannot improve their situation due to their poverty. Because I faced a lot of sufferings when my father left us in a very pathetic condition and my mother and I felt helpless in my childhood.
How has working on the HOPE Emergency Response made you feel?
Chiranjit: The sense of responsibility was very motivating. For the first time I felt proud of helping people in their most needy time. The responses from the people have inspired me further to work among the underprivileged sections. I thank all the generous donors of HOPE for their contributions.
Has Cyclone Amphan and Covid-19 affected you or your family?
Chiranjit: Yes, I and my family suffered due to the Covid Pandemic and Amphan Cyclone. Due to the lock down I was unable to meet my family as bus services were stopped. Moreover, I was very busy in working for the Emergency Response Team to be able to take a break. But I enjoyed it thoroughly and it was a learning experience.
What do your family think of the work you are doing?
Chiranjit:: My family is very happy because I am working with Hope and they feel proud of me because of the work I do. I am an inspiration for many people in my village.
Do you have a message for the people who want to know how to help?
Chiranjit: I want to thank all the supporters and well-wishers of HOPE for helping the poor and needy people in our society. I hope people will keep supporting us for the betterment of street and destitute people.
