Lusi Sharma belongs to a very poor family. Her father is a carpenter and mother is a homemaker. Lusi has four sisters and one brother. One of her sisters stays at their maternal grandmother’s house because of poverty. All the children go to school.

Core challenges and hardships faced by the child

Lusi and her family are facing financial issues. Lusi’s elder sister adds to the family income by providing tuition classes. The family lives in a very densely populated slum in an unhygienic environment. If her family’s financial situation doesn’t improve, Lusi may have to drop out of school. Lusi and her sisters do all the household works like cooking and collecting water from the KMC tank because their slum has no tap water supply. They use the common toilet and that increases the risk of infection especially for adolescent girls. Their locality has no separate toilets for girls and boys and that leads to lack of privacy especially during the night.

Lusi understands importance of hygienic practices, cleanliness and she motivated her family and other slum dwellers to maintain the habit of cleanliness.
She joined different training programs on DRR.

Mohammad Waris was born in Ward Street into an economically resource poor family. His parents are from Kolkata. In the slums of 64 Broad street they ( Waris along with his mother, father, one younger and one older sister, his other two elder sisters are married) live in a one room rented accomodation which serves as their living room cum bedroom cum kitchen. Battling poverty and hardship, his father drives a van riskshaw (to carry goods) and his mother works as a domestic worker in people’s houses. Waris works in a cap manufacturing factory where his hands moves at lightning speed with the scissor cutting the outer bands for summer caps. He cuts an average of 300 pieces daily during high order season.

Core challenges and hardships faced by the child

Waris’ hands move at lightning speed with the scissor cutting the outer bands for summer caps. He cuts an average of 300 pieces daily during high order season earning a meagre weekly income of Rs 300/-. To supplement the meager family income, Waris had to drop out of school and start earning at an early age. After seven years in this job he is almost a master cutter, talking to us and cutting at the same time like any seasoned adult worker.
In the year 2016, a Community Child Health and Hygiene club was formed in 64 Broad street as part of the Stop Diarrhoea Initiative where he was one of the members. Since then Save the Children has been engaged with him through varied means ranging from working together to make his surrounding community open defecation free through ODF tool kit, organising theatre workshops with children on issues of safe drinking water, presenting the play”Jalkatha” to the audiences during the observation of World Water Day in March 2016 or performing skit on Girls safety ” Akhir Kyun”at Indian Institute of Management Calcutta as part of the change maker series. Waris has been in an active member in all these engagements.
Waris used to listen into the discussions in the mothers group meeting of DAS. His mother was a member of this group. It was through these meetings that he got to know about DAS and their work in the community. He also got an opportunity to attend the Save the Children CRC programme at MohorKunj in 2016in Kolkata. It was in this meeting that he developed an interest in theatre. During the CRC programme a play was presented by children where one of the participants was Waris’s sister’s friend. Waris and his sister had attended the programme. It was after watching the play that Waris realised that he liked the play and the acting by the children. So when he got to know that DAS was putting together a children’s group for training them on theatre, he voluntarily enrolled into the effort.

What has the child achieved despite the challenges and how?

‘Hum teen baje se khade rehete hain aur chaar baje ke baad pani milta hain’ (‘I wait from 3 o clock but I get water only after 4 o clock’). This is the one dialogue that Waris has to speak as part of his role in the play. He feels that this dialogue epitomises the entire water shortage problem in his community. Theatre has helped him with gaining new information and knowledge related to understanding water related problems in his area – lack of public hygiene, problem of sewage, lack of clean drinking water, diseases such as diaorrhea and dengue. He feels that the message of the play that community will take ownership about keeping their area clean.
One of the major challenges for the theatre group is ensuring that children attend practice regularly. For Waris and many others like him who work during the day, it is challenging to be regular for practice since he gets very little time off from work. Despite this, Waris tries to attend the practice sessions since he likes acting.

How has Save the Children contributed to the betterment of the child?

Save the Children’s effort through DAS in bringing children together and engaging them in meaningful ways such as theatre to raise awareness on social issues is a novel effort. The theatre group is new and currently in practice and has not conducted any public performance. Therefore their current experience is of teambuilding, understanding acting and its various aspects.
In addition Waris’s experience clearly shows that long term engagement with mothers does have a positive impact on children who are exposed to various community issues at an early. Waris was knowledgeable about NGOs (DAS) presence and their work at an early age since he used to attend the mothers group meeting with his mother.

What are the child’s thoughts about his/her future

‘When I am older, I will leave this job and get a better paying job. Later I will start my own business and save more and take care of my parents’.

Rinky’s step father could not accept Rinky as his own child and neglected and abused her physically and emotionally. Rinky’s mother worked as a servant and Rinky was left to care for her step sister and brother and she never got a chance to go to school.

Due to her difficult family circumstances , Rinky ended up as a child domestic labourer living on the street , and she was soon identified by one of HOPE’s Social Workers as a child who needed protection and care. Thus Rinky was admitted to HOPE’s Ashar Alo Girls’ Home.

Rinky was then admitted to school and with the support of extra tuition, she quickly began to enjoy and excel at her studies. She is currently studying in class VIII at Kasba Jagadish Bidyapith for Girls, and she is a very keen student.

But it is on the cricket pitch that Rinky really excels and she loves the game. Playing cricket has allowed Rinky to become more expressive and participative in all creative activities. Rinky also participates in taekwondo classes and is very good at it.

Rinky is still very attached to her mother and to her step sister and brother. Her mother is very co-operative and supportive of Rinky’s dream of becoming a professional sports person.[/ultimate_modal][/ult_content_box][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”none” width=”1/4″ animation=”fadeIn”][ult_content_box box_shadow=”horizontal:2px|vertical:2px|blur:5px|spread:px|color:#777777|style:none|” margin=”margin:0px;” hover_box_shadow=”horizontal:0px|vertical:0px|blur:5px|spread:2px|color:#969696|style:outset|” bg_color=”#ffffff” padding=”padding:5px;”][vc_single_image image=”43592″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline_circle_2″ css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

His mother was suffering from mental health issues and was physically disabled and thus found it very difficult to care for her son. His father was working as a cleaner on a very low income . Irfan was neglected and exposed to all types of hazardous jobs associated with living on the streets. One of the HOPE Social Workers identified Irfan as being in need of protection and care and having brought Irfan to to Child Welfare Committee , it was agreed that he should be placed in HOPE’s Ashirbad Boys Home. Irfan has been living under the care of HOPE since 2015, when he was just 11 years old.

Irfan had never been to school before he came to live with HOPE, so it was difficult for him to adjust to the education system. He received education support from HOPE to assist him with his transition into school and to provide him with further help with his studies.

Irfan’s parents come to visit him in Ashirbad and are happy to see how he is developing. HOPE are also assisting his parents to access other local services to support their needs .

Irfan is now in class IX and is doing well at his studies. He is engaged in other extra curricular activities including dance, art and all kinds of sports. His dream is to become a professional cricketer and he has displayed a great talent for the sport.[/ultimate_modal][/ult_content_box][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeIn” width=”1/4″][ult_content_box box_shadow=”horizontal:2px|vertical:2px|blur:5px|spread:px|color:#777777|style:none|” margin=”margin:0px;” hover_box_shadow=”horizontal:0px|vertical:0px|blur:5px|spread:2px|color:#969696|style:outset|” bg_color=”#ffffff” padding=”padding:5px;”][vc_single_image image=”43590″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline_circle_2″ css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

She was brought to live in a protection home managed by “SEED”, a local partner organization of the HOPE foundation.

Rabiya’s mother had 7 small children. She was a single mother with no fixed income – only that which she could get from rag picking, so she found it extremely difficult to care for and protect her young family. Her mother had to leave her children on the street when she went rag picking and her older children, including Rabiya, were also forced to work and beg on the streets.

When Rabiya turned 13, she was moved into the care of HOPE’s Ashar Alo Home for girls.

Rabiya is very independent young girl and displays great leadership qualities. She is a keen sports person and loves playing cricket and football and taekwondo, and she trains really hard at all her sports . She also is interested and talented at art. She prefers her sport and art to her academic work , and she is currently studying in Class X in Rabindra Mukta Open School.

Rabiya is still extremely attached to her mother and to her siblings and she gets to see them regularly.
Rabiya dreams of becoming a professional cricketer and playing on the national team. She also dreams of providing support to other vulnerable street connected children, and wants to encourage them to participate in education and sports.[/ultimate_modal][/ult_content_box][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeIn” width=”1/4″][ult_content_box box_shadow=”horizontal:2px|vertical:2px|blur:5px|spread:px|color:#777777|style:none|” margin=”margin:0px;” hover_box_shadow=”horizontal:0px|vertical:0px|blur:5px|spread:2px|color:#969696|style:outset|” bg_color=”#ffffff” padding=”padding:5px;”][vc_single_image image=”43600″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_outline_circle_2″ css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][vc_column_text]

ANUPAM SHAW

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”12px”][ultimate_modal icon_type=”selector” icon=”Defaults-info-circle” modal_title=”Anupam’s Story – Age 17″ btn_size=”block” btn_bg_color=”#fb6a19″ btn_txt_color=”#ffffff” btn_text=”Read His Story” modal_size=”medium” modal_style=”overlay-zoomin” overlay_bg_color=”#fb6a19″ overlay_bg_opacity=”80″]Anupam came to live in HOPE’s Ashirbad Boys Home in 2014 when he was 13 years old. Sadly at that time, both of his parents were suffering from terminal illnesses and they were unable to care for him. This resulted in him not receiving adequate care and protection and thus he came to the attention of the local Child Welfare Committee. They in turn referred him to HOPE to take care of him.

When Anupam first came to HOPE’s protection home, he was aggressive, rude and uncooperative, as he felt he had been abandoned and neglected by his parents. He found it difficult to adhere to the rules of the home, and to communicate in a meaningful way with the other boys and staff.

Gradually, with frequent counselling and other therapeutic sessions (eg play, dance and drama), Anupam responded with positive behaviours.

HOPE staff discovered that Anupam had special educational needs and he was provided with special education supports. This has assisted him greatly in improving his school work, his relationships with the other boys and staff and in all of his other extra curricular activities.

Anupam is in school in Tollygunge Bangur primary school. He attends school and extra tuition class regularly, and is currently studying in class VIII. He is performing really well and got 4th place overall in his class last year. He loves reading, watching cartoons and playing sports. However, Anupam prefers to involve himself in all kinds of sports, and his dream is to become a professional cricketer.[/ultimate_modal][/ult_content_box][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row margin_top=”70″ anchor=”#support”][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”22px”][ultimate_heading main_heading=”Support The Team” spacer=”line_with_icon” spacer_position=”bottom” line_height=”1″ line_color=”#fb6a19″ icon_type=”custom” icon_img=”40409|https://www.thehopefoundation.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/cricket-2.png” img_width=”24″ line_width=”400″][/ultimate_heading][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row margin_top=”60″][vc_column width=”1/2″][ult_content_box bg_color=”#ffffff” box_shadow=”horizontal:px|vertical:px|blur:px|spread:px|style:outset|” hover_box_shadow=”horizontal:px|vertical:px|blur:px|spread:px|style:none|” padding=”padding:10px;”][vc_column_text]We need your help to bring the HOPE cricket team and their carers from Kolkata to participate in the Street Child Cricket World Cup and to make their dreams come true.
