Cyclone Amphan has hit the states of West Bengal and Odisha hard and the impact is exacerbated due to the existing pandemic in the country.
Last night a super cyclone devastated Kolkata and our hearts are broken. We are desperately trying to get information and an update on what is happening. There are 14 million people without power and internet so information is slow.
Since operations began around 6 weeks ago our Emergency Response Teams in Kolkata and surrounding rural areas have distributed food packs and daily provisions to over 12,000 families, which equates to approximately 60,000 individuals.
Due to all your generous donations more than 8,500 families have received supplies and managed to stay in quarantine to stop the spread of the virus. That is approximately 40,000 people who would otherwise have nothing to eat.
Geeta Venkadakrishnan, Director of HOPE Kolkata Foundation, our implementing partner in Kolkata, has sent us this heartbreaking and heartfelt observation from the frontline in Kolkata.
Our amazing team at HOPE Hospital continue their emergency response work on the ground in Kolkata. We urgently need to distribute food packs to families who now have no income due to the lockdown and we also need to provide them with basic protective supplies and equipment so that we can fight this terrible virus and slow the spread.
This week the city of Kolkata has been placed in lockdown for 21 days. Because of this, all our projects in the slums and working with street communities have been temporarily placed on hold because of the governments directive. The HOPE hospital and our protection homes are fully operating at present and will continue to do so.
Obviously there is a lot of information about the pandemic out there but we thought it would be useful to have our own dedicated tracker with a special focus on Ireland and India. The statistics are updated every 10 minutes and are from Johns Hopkins University.
We know how difficult things are for everyone at the moment; we are all worried and trying to protect our loved ones. We are asking you to help us to prepare the HOPE Hospital in Kolkata for Covid-19.
The Enet Group and the Hope Foundation came together with celebrity chef, Richard Corrigan, to raise funds to support the running of a rehabilitation home in Kolkata.
